Justin Shoulder and Matthew Stegh’s work CARRION is a profound melding of costume and body; a mutual transformation which produces creatures that feel real, through and through. Drawing on queer and bicultural ancestral mythologies in CARRION the body itself seems transformed or extricated in a work that asks what it means to be human in an era when our destructive influence over the planet is rapidly redefining the laws of nature.

Justin shoulder: lead artist
Justin Shoulder is an artist working in performance, sculpture, video and nightlife/ community events production. Shoulder uses his body and craft to forge connections between queer, migrant, spiritual and intercultural experiences. He is a founding member of queer artist collective The Glitter Militia and Club Ate, has performed and exhibited internationally, recent highlights include: Carrion at Fusebox Festival (Austin, USA 2018); the video body of work Ex Nilalang for AsiaTOPA by Club Ate (Melbourne, Australia 2017). First Sight at Museum Macan (Jakarta, Indonesia 2017), and the premiere of his feature length theatre work Carrion for Liveworks, Performance Space Sydney 2017
Matthew Stegh - Costume & Set Design (with Justin Shoulder)
Matthew Stegh is an interdisciplinary artist who has worked in the entertainment and arts industries for the past 20 years. His extensive experience includes fashion, costume and set design, styling and art direction for film, television, advertising, theatre and stills photography distributed internationally. Stegh is a founding member of the art collective The Glitter Militia, co-creating parties and events for Sydney’s vibrant queer community (Monsta Gras, Pink Bubble, Clown Cult). Stegh’s fashion label ‘Haus of Hellmutti’ is generating attention locally and internationally for its focus on queer identities, ethical production and salvaged materials.
Corin Ileto - composer
Corin Ileto is an artist, producer and performer drawing from a background in classical composition. Through the performative aspect of Ileto’s compositions, she further explores intuitive algorithms through the mechanics of human memory.
Victoria hunt - co-choreographer and mentor
Hunt’s tribal affiliations are to Te Arawa, Rongowhakaata, Ngāti Kahungunu Maori, English, Finnish and Irish. HINEMIHI marae (ancestral house) was commissioned by Victoria’s great, great grandfather Aporo te Wharekaniwha and identifies the whakapapa “lineage” of the Ngati Hinemihi people. The marae holds particular significance for Victoria who inherits a role as kaitiaki “guardian” of HINEMIHI. She is a founding member of De Quincey Co and toured with them, MAU, Legs On The Wall, Marrugeku. Since 2003 Victoria has toured and been awarded for a body of solo performance work & works in collaboration with other artists.
Ben cisterne - lighting design
Benjamin’s reputation is for finesse and a gutsy approach to design, based in light. Benjamin is known for creating bold designs that are integral to a project. He works collaboratively and has been involved in all forms of museum, exhibition and performing arts projects professionally for 15 years. Benjamin is passionate about the capability of light in spacial design, performance and its role in art. Benjamin has extensive experience working both nationally and internationally with diverse teams and projects. He splits his time between exhibition / museum specification and performing arts design.
